Measuring Up

General Information

  • As a rule, doors are ‘glazed’ (installed) from the inside and windows from the outside.
  • ‘Tight’ size refers to the dimensions of the aperture into which the glass is to be fitted.
  • To ensure a good fit, glass size is generally 3 to 4 mm less overall than tight size.
  • Extra care should be taken with old unsquare frames.
  • If possible remove the putty or bead so that sizes can be checked.
  • We need to know the visible size if your panels are to have a border.

    Critical Locations

In internal and external walls in terms of safety (BS 6262 part 4)

Safety glass is required on any panel below 1500mm from the floor on a door or within 300mm of a door. It is also required on any panel within 800mm of the floor.

Laminated glass is also strongly recommended for security. Because it is constructed of two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer it resists casual break-in attempts.

    Darker areas show critical locations to which requirement N1 applies (ie. glazing in areas numbered 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12).
